1998 AGM
JOHN RAFFERTY IS OUR NEW PRESIDENT
The tenth (post-inaugural) Annual General Meeting was held at its usual venue, by kind permission of the High Commissioner, on Friday 30th October last, attended by 31 members and five guests. This was the third largest turnout, not quite equalling the 40+ attendees at the 1992 and 1993 AGMs.
In his opening remarks President Lloyd Bascom spoke of his recent trip to Guyana, via Washington where he had collected US$240 from old boys of the school and other well wishers. This had been presented to QCOSA President Laurie Lewis at a meeting of that Association in Georgetown.
He confirmed his intention not to stand for the Presidency, which he had held for 5½ years following Cecil Pilgrim's departure in December 1992 at the end of his term as High Commissioner, and paid tribute to the work of the outgoing Committee.
The election of Officers saw the Committee's nominee John O V Rafferty, MBE returned unopposed as our third President. In an impromptu speech following his election, John in turn paid tribute to the part played by his predecessor both during his Presidency and before that as a member of the Management Committee. Lloyd, like John, had been a founder member of the Association.
The Committee's choice of Presidential candidate was in recognition of the immense contribution he had made in setting up the Association and guiding it in its early years. It was John who had convened the first meeting of alumni, held on 11th December 1987, which eventually led to the formation of the Association, who had been chairman of the interim steering committee and the first Chairman of the Association following its inauguration in June 1988.
Other electoral results together with the appointments agreed at the first meeting of the 1998-99 Management Committee follow.
