Report on ICQC Meeting held in London, England
September 11th - 12th, 1998
Highlights:
  • The meeting was hosted by the Guyana High Commissioner at the office of the High Commission.
  • The following chapters were represented: London, New York, Guyana and Toronto plus a representative from the Eastern Caribbean (BVI) which is not a formal chapter at this time.
  • Attendance -- 16 delegates:

  • Appointment of officers for 98/99:

  • Sharing of information:
    • minutes to be forwarded at a later date and to be placed on the website.
    • copies of all chapter reports attached.
  • Discussions:
    • need for increase in use of website --- material to be forwarded to New York for inclusion.
    • all chapters agreed to forward alumni list to Communications Coordinator for posting on the website.

    • delegates all refered to difficulties re fundraising which they attribute to “donor fatigue.”
    • chapter in Guyana affected by tension between Board of Governors and the Executive -- manifested in communication style and interaction.
    • Guyana chapter to provide monthly reports to all chapters.
  • Relevance of ICQC generated much discussion:
    • New York placed this topic on the agenda expressing concerns already raised in Toronto.
    • unanimous agreement that ICQC is relevant and should continue to be supported as a mechanism for exchange of information and ideas, for keeping the spirit of commitment and ownership alive worldwide; it was acknowledged that even with the assistance of electronic communications technology available today, the face-to-face contact experienced at the meeting served to keep the issues alive and pressing.
    • acknowledgement that perhaps we should collectively review and articulate the terms of reference to confirm the relevance of the body and to ensure that it provides the support originally envisaged and which it can still be expected to deliver.
  • Toronto Chapter reported that charitable status still pending because of change in government regulations.
    • committed our chapter to be responsible for refurbishing the stage i.e. lights, electronic equipment, curtains etc – specs to be provided by Georgetown.
    • Toronto to be host of next ICQC meeting with a preference expressed by delegates for Caribana weekend.
