FATHERS' DAY BRUNCH
A HUGE SUCCESS
-- by Lester Fernandes

Our Fathers' Day Brunch was held at the Burrows Hall Community Centre in Scarborough on Sunday, June 13th, 1999 and was an outstanding success. It was attended by 181 alumni and their guests, who were treated to a wonderful Guyanese meal and performances by an international group of entertainers.

The hall was decorated with posters displaying the Q.C. coat of arms and the names and colours of the ten school houses - Percival, Raleigh, Austin, Durban, Pilgrim, Weston, Cunningham, Moulder, Wooley and Nobbs. The serviettes also reflected the house colours that are familiar to all Q.C. students.

Attendees enjoyed the typical creole cuisine which included curry chicken and roti, chowmein, garlic pork, salt fish cake and cook-up rice prepared by Terry Headley, washed down with mauby, sorrel, fly and ginger beer. The dessert brought back memories of home with pine tart and black and pound cake.

The entertainment was outstanding. The Hawaiian Pacific Magic Dance Group of Toronto performed sensual, hip swinging dances to the delight of the audience. Our own Alumni Vice president, Leyland Muss represented the executive in the competition for amateur dancers accompanying the young ladies of the group and won hands (or bottoms?) down. The graceful movements of the Taranna Dance Group were superb, especially those of one

little young lady who captivated the audience with her poise and charm. The performance of the Caribbean Children Dance Theatre Group to the familiar rhythms of our part of the world was much appreciated by all.

For many of the older generation, the dulcet tones of another member of the executive, the incomparable Conrad Griffith were among the highlights of the afternoon. Nostalgia of the fifties and sixties was revived with his rendition of "My Girl" and "The Great Pretender", among other songs, reminding us of the good old days of bicycles and sea wall and sub-parties and picnics and cheek-to-cheek dancing. Last but not least, Auntie Cumsee entertained us with her amusing stories in creolese, using expressions not heard since our young days.

There were door and raffle prizes donated by friends and old students, none more coveted than the plant in a pot with scenes from the Georgetown Botanical Gardens, painted by Joan Muss. I tried to convince the winner that as the seller of the raffle ticket and in keeping with the Guyana tradition of a seller's prize, I should keep the pot and she the plant, but all I was rewarded with was a "cut eye".

The brunch afforded us the opportunity to meet old school mates whom we have not seen for many a day. Altogether, it was a memorable afternoon for which the organizers and helpers deserve hearty congratulations. Special thanks should be extended to the Master of Ceremonies, Arthur Henery, who has promised to practise and dethrone Leyland as lead dancer at the next Q.C. Fathers' Day Brunch to be held on June 10, 2000. See you there!!!!
