TWELFTH NIGHT DANCE
By Albert Ramprasad |
|
On hearing that the QC “Dance Committee” was in the process of organizing a dance to be called “Twelfth Night Dance”; I asked my wife what is the meaning of Twelfth Night and she explained that it meant counting twelve days after Christmas, which made it approximately the 6th of January, the day on which the dance was held.
Generally a number of fund raising dances have been organized by the years; and also Bishops’ High School had done the same thing each year separately. In November 2000, the idea of doing a joint venture type dance was brought to the table for discussion, and despite some apprehensions by the QC committee, an agreement was reached in December 2000 to stage a joint venture dance by Q/C and Bishops’. Our fund raising dance in October did not end on an enterprising note for us; but our potential fears of a repetition was soon dispelled as faith would have it. The ticket sales took off like a rocket on both sides; and augured well for us. As stated on the tickets, the patrons were invited to enjoy a nostalgic evening at the “Moonlight Ballroom” on Bayview Avenue, North York on January 6, 2001. |
For lucky ones who bought tickets, it will always be “a night to remember” for a long time. Despite some light snowfall in the evening, the turn out was excellent so much so that by 9:00 p.m. the hall was filled to capacity and by 11:00 p.m. there was an overflow of late revellers.
The Dance was one of enthusiasm, good cheer and ubiquitous camaraderie as the patrons loosened up as the night progressed. The bar which was left to others thus relieving our committee members of this task, was extremely busy. The food, consisting of roti and curry, cook up rice and black pudding was available for those who got hungry. The turn out was great, with people coming from far away places like Ottawa and Kapuskasing, Ontario; the only explanation being that it might have been a good time to close off the festivities for the Christmas/New Year period. We danced to the end, to the vibrating rythms of “Tropical Vibes” who provided a good mix of West Indian, Calypso, reggae and Christmas tunes. A special mention should be given to Arthur Henery, Lester Fernandes and Leyland Muss who were responsible for the majority of the Q/C Alumni tickets being sold. In a number of ways, the dance was a huge success, for both Q/C and Bishops’; such that there is talk now of making this a yearly event similar to the Last Lap Lime. For those who missed this original event, there will be others to attend in the future. |
