APPRECIATION EVENING (cont'd)
When she did some research for her doctorate in Albuoystown, she saw the problem at close range. People were no longer buying beef/chicken by the pound, but by the ounce. This is the level of poverty to which two-thirds of the population has sunk. This type of existence is very wounding.

These three forms of violence are inter-connected, and all have a feminist face. It is the women who have to do the shopping and have to find means of stretching their already meagre budgets to feed their families. Not an easy task.

Dr.Trotz ended her speech by telling us that she wanted to play a more active part in the Toronto Alumni Association.

This was followed by a lively period of questions and answer, after which some delightful Guyanese "finger foods" were served and enjoyed by all.

Arthur Henery thanked Dr. Trotz for her thoughtful discourse , and expressed the hope that she would indeed be able to give us some of her time in future.

LITERARY EVENING

Peter Bhola gave a good reading to Seville Farley's, soon to be published book "Where the Peoples Have Gathered". This book has some comic moments while making social comments.

The evening ended with the reading of a short story "Canada Geese and Apple Chatney" by Sasenaraine Persaud from the Oxford Book of Caribbean Short Stories. A story of young Guyanese Immigrants who are struggling in a new society. Arthur Henery had been promising to read this story for over a year and finally got his chance this year. It was worthwhile.

It was altogether an entertaining and enlightening evening that we should keep going.
