Lynette Dolphin Passes On
Dolphin, the recipient of national awards--the Cacique Crown of Honour and the Order of Roraima--was well-known for her contribution to the teaching profession and to culture. She worked in the public sector for 60 years and was Chairman of the Department of Culture for over 25 years. She had attended the Bishops' High School and did her first stint of teaching at the St Angela's School. She later attended the Teachers Training College and taught for a while at the Beterverwagting School. Dolphin then went to England on a British Council Bursary to study music. On her return she taught at Queen's College before moving to the Department of Culture. Dolphin, who turned 84 on Monday, was the first director of Carifesta and her advice and assistance had been subsequently sought for other Carifesta celebrations. Besides the two national awards, Dolphin was also accorded the honour of being a Member of the British Empire. Dolphin compiled six books of song, the most recent being one of 100 folk songs of Guyana. |
